Downsizing a Parent's Home, One Room at a Time
Cleaning out a parent's house feels huge until you break it into rooms. The trick is the order you do them in and who makes the calls.
Give yourself time
Start six to eight weeks before the move if you can. Keep work sessions to two or three hours so nobody burns out or gets short with each other.
Start with the easy rooms
Begin with low-emotion spaces like the garage, basement, and spare rooms. Move on to the living areas, bedrooms, and kitchen as the date gets closer, and save the sentimental rooms for later. Let your parent lead the decisions whenever possible.
Sorting tips that help
- Use four piles: keep, donate, sell, and discard.
- Keep one limited "undecided" box so nothing stalls the process.
- Photograph pieces that won't make the move.
- In the kitchen, keep only everyday items. Measure before choosing living room furniture.
- Sort clothing by what's been worn recently.
Before anything leaves the house
Set aside medications, firearms, valuables, and important papers before any donation pickup.
Move day
Set up the bed, bathroom, and a first-night bag first, so your parent has a comfortable place to land.
