Probate in Cook County: What Families Should Expect

After a parent dies, someone has to settle their estate. When that runs through the courts, it's called probate. For families in the Northwest Suburbs, that usually means the Probate Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Probate exists to make sure things are handled in order. The court confirms the will, if there is one, and appoints someone to manage the estate. That person identifies and values what your parent owned, pays valid debts and taxes, and then distributes what's left to the heirs.

It can feel slow and formal, especially while you're grieving. Knowing the steps ahead of time takes a lot of the stress out of it, and so does knowing which assets may pass outside probate entirely, like accounts with a named beneficiary or property held in a trust.

Our full article walks through what probate is, why it exists, and what families in Cook County should expect along the way.
